Short-Term Rehabilitation: Recovery in Progress

Short-Term Rehabilitation: Recovery in Progress

By Jan Ferington

Product Description:

Assisting the public to become informed consumers of health care is as much a part of health care service as the care giving. Rehabilitative subacute care delivery is a good example. In the past, when an individual had a serious health event, one that required hospitalization, it used to be common for that individual to remain in the hospital for an extended period of recovery. This is no longer the case. Recent health care reform has resulted in shorter hospital stays. Once a health problem is diagnosed and stabilized, if an individual needs a period of physical rehabilitation, those services are now provided as rehabilitative subacute care or short-term rehabilitation. At the same time that hospital stays are becoming shorter, the public is being told that they need to play a more active role in maintaining their health. Patients/clients must now be knowledgeable health care consumers. The video presentation, Short-term Rehabilitation: Recovery in Progress, can assist both health care consumers and health care providers in keeping up to date on the process of subacute care delivery.

Physical Examination Tests: An Evidence-Based Approach

By Chad Cook, Eric Hegedus

Product Description:

This book is the first to truly demonstrate benefit, by using a test and measure for screening or for diagnostic confirmation, which shows appropriate diagnostic accuracy, is free from bias, and should be reproducible and effective for the condition and clinical environment at hand. Since for some orthopedic clinicians, the statistical terminology may be unfamiliar, chapter one is essentially a user’s guide for the book. Additional chapters include: Neurological and Structural Differentiation Testing , Special Clinical Tests of the Hip, and Special Clinical Tests of the Lower Leg, Ankle and Foot. For ease of access, the tests are listed in each chapter according to pathoanatomical classification and ordered in a descending fashion, from best to worst, based on their “Utility Score”. Facilitated Stretching DVD

Facilitated Stretching DVD

By Robert McAtee, Jeff Charland

Product Description:

Audiences: Textbook for massage therapy, athletic training, and other related courses; reference for sports medicine and fitness professionals, therapists, coaches, and athletes.

The third edition of Facilitated Stretching is now revised, reorganized, and packaged with a DVD--surpassing its popular predecessor as the best source for the latest PNF (proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation) stretching techniques.

Facilitated Stretching, Third Edition, provides a useful overview of PNF stretching--a safe and easy-to-use method that involves stretching the muscle, contracting it isometrically against resistance, then stretching it again to a new range of motion. These steps apply whether you are isolating one muscle at a time or using the spiral-diagonal patterns of PNF to stretch groups of muscles simultaneously. The third edition contains all the great features of the previous edition, plus the following:

•A companion DVD that demonstrates live stretching techniques from the book for a clearer understanding

•New stretching routines for a variety of popular activities including running, golf, swimming, cycling, and throwing and racket sports

•General stretches and stretches for older participants

•Stretching activities with added strength work using stability balls and elastic bands

•Stretching and strengthening tips for dealing with--and even preventing--common soft-tissue injuries

The new edition has also been reorganized using a regional approach to presenting muscle group functions around specific joints. You will learn how to stretch each major muscle in the body, both individually and in groups. In addition, you will discover how to appropriately use group pattern stretches to improve flexibility and coordination and individual muscle stretches to relax tight muscles and break up adhesions within or between muscles. Instruction is provided for using the techniques on your own or with a partner.

More than 350 photographs showing the progression of stretches enrich the book while the new 60-minute DVD demonstrates the stretches and strengthening exercises in even more detail. Icons are featured throughout the text, indicating which exercises are demonstrated on the DVD. A unique binding also allows you to lay the book flat while performing the exercises without losing your place. The DVD serves as a great visual tool for improving your technique and getting the most out of your routines.

An ideal reference for fitness professionals, Facilitated Stretching, Third Edition, provides techniques to help athletes, patients, and clients improve flexibility, strength, and coordination while also treating and preventing injuries. Students in massage therapy, athletic training, and other professional training programs will discover how to use facilitated stretching in conjunction with massage and other manual therapy techniques.

With Facilitated Stretching, Third Edition, you have a cutting-edge tool packed with the latest PNF stretching techniques to help you assess current muscle function, improve range of motion, increase strength, reduce overuse injuries, and enhance performance.

Manual of Acupuncture on Cd-Rom

Manual of Acupuncture on Cd-Rom

By Deadman

Product Description

Once in a great while an extraordinary book is published that sets an entirely new standard in its field. A Manual of Acupuncture, published by Journal of Chinese Medicine Publications, is just such a book. Painstakingly researched over many years by Peter Deadman, editor-in-chief of The Journal of Chinese Medicine, and colleagues Mazin Al-Khafaji and Kevin Baker, this book has become the primary reference in the West for the study of acupuncture points and channels. With the subtle use of color to illustrate the acupuncture points and anatomical features, the new second edition of A Manual of Acupuncture is even more attractive and user-friendly than the first. Introductory chapters describe and illustrate the channels and collaterals, the various categories of points, and methods of selection, location, and needling. Ensuing chapters present each of the points of the 14 channels as well as the extra (miscellaneous) points, identified by their English and pinyin names, and Chinese characters. Each point is located in accordance with the most exacting anatomical standards to be found in any Western textbook. For each point there is a dedicated drawing, followed by regional body drawings. The quality of the 500 drawings is far superior to those in any other TCM text. There are also practical pointers for finding and needling the points, and cautionary information about what to avoid. In addition to point indexes by their English and pinyin names, there is an index identifying every part of the body reached by each of the channels, and separate indexes of point indications listed according to both TCM and biomedical symptoms.

Hydrotherapy Videos

Hydrotherapy Videos

by : Halliwick Association of Swimming Therapy

Halliwick is based on principles of hydrostatics, hydrodynamics and kinesiology. It is an holistic approach, bringing together knowledge about: the water and the body; teaching and learning; motivation; challenge; activities, games and music; group dynamics; disability equality issues and swimming strokes.

Swimmers are taught on a one-to-one ratio until complete independence is achieved but each pair is a unit within a group activity so that the swimmer gains advantage of group work but also gaining from the constant attention of an individual instructor. No flotation aids are used so the swimmer is able to discover their own balanced position in the water by learning to deal with any problems of imbalance.

The structure of teaching is the Ten Point Programme. Points 1 & 2 are Mental Adjustment, which includes breathing control and relaxation, and Disengagement, the process of becoming independent in the water. Both are points the swimmer has to deal with as each new skill is introduced. The control of rotational forces are covered by points 3 to 6, then comes learning about Upthrust, Balance and Turbulent gliding (points 7 to 9) and finally Propulsion. Point 10 is a simple progression and a basic swimming stroke.
